Stories From Our Campers & Parents

Hattie

Age 8
Hometown Fort Worth, TX
Years at Huawni 1

Before Camp

“I didn’t know how much fun it was to be outside! At home in the summer I would wake up and watch T.V. and sit inside all morning. I definitely wasn’t used to the early flag raising when it started! But being outdoors and getting to spend time playing outside with my friends showed me how much fun it can be to spend time in a beautiful place and enjoy nature.”

The Huawni Experience

“I had so much fun the first week I was here that I had to come back for two more weeks before the summer was over! My favorite part about camp is being able to choose so much of what I do. I loved getting to pick the hike on Sunday afternoon and go to Turtle Rock and jump into the creek! It was awesome getting to see a different part of camp that a lot of people don’t see. I even got to play in the rain with all of my friends!”

After Camp

“I am going to miss my friends so much! My cabin, Cedar Ridge, only had six campers, so we grew really close over the two weeks. I will always remember our cabin tradition, when our counselors Kayla, Alex, Amanda, and Kalli decorated pillowcases with our names that we all signed and had a big dessert party. We weren’t supposed to have the party that night, but a huge rainstorm hit camp and our counselors surprised us with it! Memories like that will keep camp on my mind until I am back next year!”

Advice To Future Campers

“Camp might sound cool, but it is even better when you get to actually be here! There are so many parts of camp that you can’t fully understand until you get here, like the beauty of the campus.”

Jack, Tanner & Thomas

Age 12
Hometown Colorado Springs, CO
Years at Camp 3, 6 & 5
Tanner (6 yrs) hops out of the drink; Thomas (5 yrs) hustles to beat his O.C. time.

Before Camp

“We were just a bunch of bored kids in Colorado! Two of our moms went to Huawni when they were younger, but we would have never imagined all of us would end up spending our summers in Texas, bringing as many people as we could fit in our cars down here! Colorado is awesome, but once we came to Huawni we got to experience another world: the Pineywoods of East Texas. We soon realized how much fun we were missing out on.”

The Huawni Experience

“Our first year it was just Tanner and I (Thomas) along with our sisters. We were nervous about coming, but we are all really close and together we made a lot of friends. From that year on we have shared Huawni with so many of our friends. This summer we had nine Colorado kids come, and we can’t seem to stop telling people about it! Huawni gives us the opportunity to do so many things we can’t do at home, even in Colorado. How many of our friends can say they’ve run an obstacle course through big old pine trees with 40 of their best friends and counselors?”

After Camp

“From the second we give that last goodbye to our friends and counselors, we are itching to get back here to Texas. We miss things like getting to compete in Tribal Competition and getting to live in cabins with our best friends. We even kind of miss not having air conditioning! Camp has an atmosphere that you can’t find anywhere else, and we get to have simple fun. The things we do here aren’t fun because they’re complicated, or fancy, or expensive…they’re just fun! Mud sliding, swim & snow cone night, and Critter Pond Mixer are some of the ways we can have fun with nothing but the friends around us!”

Advice To Future Campers

“No matter where you are from, Huawni is where you need to be next summer! Nobody knows how to have as much fun as your counselors do, and they always make sure that each summer is better than your last here. From the cabins we live in to the activities that fill the days here, camp is filled to the brim with the fun your summer is missing!”

Meg

Age 11
Hometown Lufkin, TX
Years at Camp 6
Meg (6 yrs) gets swung by her best friend Hannah (3 yrs) as they do what we do alot at Huawni- laugh.

Before Camp

“I have a crazy personality, but when I’m at home in school I am to nervous to be myself and show who I really am. It is intimidating to be wild and crazy when you are worried what other people think of you, and before Huawni I never really had a place where I could just be myself!”

The Huawni Experience

“This summer I danced on tables, I sang at the top of my lungs, and I even ran around in a super hero cape with my counselor Alex Lange! Camp was exactly what I needed – everyone here loves you for who you are, and they’re wild and crazy too! When I’m here, I show a side of myself that a lot of people at home don’t see. I’m talkative, more confident, and outgoing with my cabin. I also love all of the activities at camp – you can do almost anything! I like getting to do things like beating my time on the O.C., but I also love being more relaxed at activities like Arts and Crafts, where I can write letters to my friends and have glitter fights with my activity group!”

After Camp

“Every year when I come home from camp, I know that I come back with more confidence in myself and who I am. At the end of the summer, I know that I can go back to school ready to show people more of who I really am and how crazy and fun I can be! This summer was my sixth year at camp, and I know that I have changed so much because of my summers here. I can’t wait to keep coming back year after year and learn how to believe in myself even more!”

Advice To Future Campers

“Camp is the best way to spend your summer – I promise! You meet your best friends, and you get to spend time with counselors that really care about you. I have never been somewhere where everyone loves you so unconditionally, and once you realize how rare that is, you don’t want to leave Huawni!”

Trey

Hometown Carrizo Springs, TX
Age 14
Years at Huawni 5

Before Camp

“I couldn’t wait to see my friends! I have missed all of the guys from 2nd Session over the year, because we have grown close over the past few years. But I was also nervous about the possibility of staying an extra two weeks and meeting a whole new session of people. After four years with the same group of friends in 2nd Session, I was really intimidated at the thought of meeting 110 new campers!”

The Huawni Experience

“Camp has always felt like my second home, and staying for a month this summer showed me how true that really is for me. Home is where you are surrounded by people who care about you, and I couldn’t describe camp a better way than that! The counselors encouraged me to try new things (I did the trolley for the first time in four years), lifted me up, and taught me how to be a leader to younger campers that looked up to me. My friends were always there to do crazy things with me, like to steal our coveted bench back from the girls of Pine Top or to just hang out and get to know each other better. No matter what activity you’re at, or what cabin you’re in, you are always somewhere with friends and people who care about you!”

After Camp

“It’s so cool to leave camp knowing that you got to spend time with your old friends but also realizing you got to meet a ton of new friends too. The guys in Berry Patch West 3rd Session helped me to feel like I had been going to that session for my whole life, and I hope I can come back next year for a month again to see everyone! I had nothing to worry about coming for an extra two weeks… it was the best decision I could have made, and I will always remember this summer at Huawni!”

Advice To Future Campers

“Get to Huawni as soon as you can! You meet your best friends here, and the sooner you come, the more years you get to spend with these awesome people. The campers and counselors here are what makes camp special, and you are.”

Alright – let’s pack for Camp!
