WOLFING Down Midnight Snacks in Fort Worth

Thursday, January 28th 2016

Our night in Fort Worth has come and gone way too fast! Midnight snacks were a hit—the blue wolf especially liked the nutter butters and star crunch. In fact, he “blue” the competition away in the eating contest. Things got a little wild. We continued the night with sing song and boy, did Asia sing songs as sweet as his syrup! But, the fun didn’t stop there—Asia also brought over some craw dads, he said they cost two for a dime. Unfortunately, Joe Shields said he couldn’t come over to the party because he had to fix the shingles, oil the hinges, and mend the window panes. Nonetheless, it felt like no time had passed since we saw our Fort Worth families in Summer 2015, and we are counting down the days until we see them in Summer 2016—127 days!

P.S. Can you count how many puns were in this blog? Special thanks to Camp Huawni alum, Price Downham, for the Huawni-themed puns.

The Heart of Huawni in the Heart of Texas... Dallas!

Thursday, January 28th 2016

Stop one: Dallas, Texas. Even though I’ve been to Dallas hundreds of time in my life, going for Camp Parties is different. It feels more like a home away from home when we get to see faces that we’ve watched grow up over the last several years. It is what gets me excited about spending summers at camp—watching kids grow up. Being the youngest in my family, I’ve never watched someone grow up and be shaped into who they were created to be. Thank you, Dallas families for letting us be a part of your kids’ growth and for reminding me of that January 25th!

Home is Where the Camp Party is--Henderson, TX

Tuesday, February 4th 2014

The Henderson House is one of my favorite places. It is the most welcoming, homey places I know and whenever I need to feel some deep love and comfort, I know the Henderson House is always there. The Adams’ definitely know how to be wonderful hosts with open arms at all times; it is the perfect dose of Camp in the winter months. The Henderson House and Camp Huawni both welcome anyone and everyone to feel unconditional, limitless amounts of love and comfort, freedom and escape. Just like at the Henderson House, whenever people step foot on Camp Huawni ground, the hard things in life disappear for a bit, it no longer matters what you look like, what you sound like, what you do for fun—you are loved simply because you are who you are. I have never witnessed kids experience self-confidence, empowerment, and love like they do at Camp Huawni; it was a joy to see that again in Henderson at the Adams’ Camp Party. So, thank you, Adams Family, for creating this atmosphere, for creating this place of love and comfort, freedom and escape.

Long-Awaited Time in Longview, TX

Tuesday, February 4th 2014

What better place to get a taste of Camp than in Longview, TX on a Thursday night?! It was great to spend time with Camp Families in Longview and even got to see some of our A+ Counseling Staff. The night was lead by some of Camp Huawni’s originals—Mike and Pam Adams. We are so thankful for the Adams’ for making Camp Huawni what it is today and for the Brown’s for bringing Camp to Longview, TX. Cannot wait to see you all again in a couple of months!

Peyton (5 years at Camp) and Madyn (6 years at Camp) reminisce as they watch the session video from Summer 2013.

Bringing Camp to Austin, TX and Back

Thursday, January 30th 2014

This was the first Austin Camp Party we had with our offices now officially in Austin! Thank you, McCutchins, for hosting us and making Austin feel more and more like Camp. My favorite part of the night was looking at Camp Huawni “Then and Now.” The McCutchins made a poster of pictures of Camp back when Mr. McCutchin attended as a kid. On the other half of the poster were pictures of Camp now that Maddy, Ella, and Luke all come to Camp. It is fun to see what has changed and what has remained the same in 50 years of Summer Camp. After eating pizza, Sing Song-ing, and talking Camp, we had the most oozy gooey s’mores ever—our faces were covered in ‘mallow and chocolate, but we didn’t hate that at all!

Cannot wait to see everyone in Austin back at Camp for Summer 2014!

Setting Foot in Shreveport, LA

Tuesday, January 28th 2014

What a great, cold night in Shreveport, Louisiana! It was a delight to catch up with some of our returning families as well as meet new families from Louisiana. We even had one of our best counselors, Brandon, drive an hour to come hang out! It is so cool to see how much our college staff loves the kids by taking time out of their crazy college schedule to come hang out with them. Thank you to the Berry’s for opening your home and feeding us really well with cookies + sandwiches + s’mores + juice! It was so much fun to run around and get a taste of Camp in the middle of January—can’t wait to be back together again in a couple of months!

I got to see one of my first campers, Zoe (4 years at Camp), for the first time in months!

Going to the Corners of Texas to Texarkana, TX

Tuesday, January 21st 2014

The Taylor girls, Paige, Mia, and Emily are the epitome of lovely and contagious. If you ever are in need of some pure joy, go hang out with the Taylors. It was so much fun to meet some new families in Texarkana and talk Camp, especially Family Camp. Mrs. Molly Taylor told us a neat story about how much Camp and Family Camp has helped Paige to become more independent and outgoing—it is stories like this that make me love my job. We are so excited to see what this next summer holds for the Taylors and the rest of our Camp families!

Making Friends in Friendswood, TX

Tuesday, January 21st 2014

What a fun night at the Daly’s in Friendswood! The Princes and Dalys sure do know how to have a Camp Party—being at their house felt a lot like being at Camp, being at home. We started the night off with some good ol’ fashioned Sing Song and story telling. We could hardly wait to watch the Session video so we watched not just one, not two, but THREE sessions videos because we just could not get enough of Camp in Friendswood. The night cooled down just right to roast some marshmallows by the best fire of the season made by the one and only, Mr. Dan Daly. Maybe we can convince him to come to Camp this summer to build all our fires! Miss Alli put the “more” in “s’mores.” Every time I looked she was eating yet another s’more with a good amount of it on her face to save for a snack later ;) 8:00PM rolled around and the party was done, but we certainly were not. It was so fun to stick around and spend more time with the families in Friendswood. We are looking to coming back to Friendswood soon!

Marshall (2 years at Camp) eats s'mores all night long. Can't wait to have him back at Camp this Summer!

A Grand Camp Huawni Family Reunion in Houston, TX

Friday, January 17th 2014

It was a refreshing night to see so many of our Camp Huawni families in Houston last night at the Doyle’s! And let me tell you what, Colby Doyle knows how to get the party started with only the best: Chick-fil-a nuggets, fresh fruit, chips, and desserts galore! Soon after, we all gathered around the camp fire for some good ol’ Sing Song time with (soon-to-be) Daddy Travis. But you can’t have Sing Song on a Thursday night without some warm s’mores, as Caitlin knows…

Caitlin, 4 years at Camp, preps her marshmallow to be roasted for an epic s'more!

After s’mores we watched the 2013 Session 2 video; talk about great memories and excitement for Summer 2014!

Some days I get caught up in the grind of work, but last night was a perfect reminder of why I do what I do. There is something incredibly special about a lifelong, multigenerational, extended family that is united by rich tradition, time outdoors, meaningful relationships, simple fun, and true growth. Thank you, Doyles for opening your homes and hearts; y’all are one of a kind!

Grace, (1 year at Camp) Caitlin, (4 years at Camp), and Oliver (1 year at Camp) howl like a dog before we sing a Camp Huawni classic, 'Salty Dog.'

Winding down after a great party means I get to play with Caitlin, Megan, AND Emma's hair. Great way to end!

Bringing the Summer Fun to Fort Worth, TX

Thursday, January 16th 2014

Last night we had the time of our life at the Mayfields with tons of our Fort Worth friends. Ruth, Mary Blair, and Luke were wonderful hosts and made everyone that entered feel right at home, just like at Camp— thank you! After some crazy sing song time and oozy gooey s’mores, the Mayfields gave us the hook up with a GIANT outdoor screen to watch the Camp Huawni session video; there is something so nice about watching great films under that Texas winter sky.

Cannot wait to see all of our Fort Worth friends again at Camp Huawni in a couple of months!

Time Flies When You're at a Camp Party in Dallas, TX

Wednesday, January 15th 2014

Wow! What a great night to be in Dallas, Texas! Thank you to the Loughry Family for having us all in your home. After chowing down on some hot dogs, chips, and fruit, we ran around outside and got a feel for what Camp will be like this summer with some guitar tunes and warm s’mores on a cool night. Our Men’s Assistant Director, Pete Fitzsimmons, came out again for another Camp Party as well as two of our new counselors, Jessica and Cody. Can’t wait to see what Summer 2014 has in store for us… looks pretty promising if it is anything like our time in Dallas.

Nothing warms up a cool Texas winter night like some warm, gooey s'mores!

Starting off Camp Parties Perfectly in Frisco, TX

Wednesday, January 15th 2014

Frisco was a wonderful start to our 2014 Camp Party season! Thank you to the Eisenmann’s for not only opening your home but also showing us what it is like to be a part of the Camp Huawni Family—there was a lot of love and laughter in the room Monday night! On top of that, we got a surprise visit from two of our counselors, Madison McCauley and Pete Fitzsimmons, which made it feel that much more like Summer. Looking forward to seeing more of Frisco at Camp Huawni for Summer 2014!
