The Difference is in the Staff
AMuddy groupn essential ingredient of what makes Camp Huawni such a special place is our counselors and summer directing staff who not only love the great Texas outdoors, but more importantly, love kids.

The camper to counselor ratio is 3:1, allowing for personal interaction at every stage of Camp.  These great mentors offer campers the help and support that reflect Camp Huawni's Christian philosophy.

We take our responsibility seriously in caring for parents’ most prized possessions. During our comprehensive staff training, we emphasize the important influence that Camp and staff can have in the life of a child.  Camp Huawni significantly contributes to the positive development of the whole child - mind, body, and spirit.

We Handpick the Best of the Best

We typically get about 400 applications each year and go through a stringent process to choose around 50 out of that group and of that group, approximately 90% are returning staff from the previous summer.

The average counselor is college-aged and has been a former camper and has gone through our Counselor in Training program before becoming a certified Camp Huawni counselor.

We do in-depth background checks on each counselor before we hire them and lead them through a week-long training where we cover topics such as positive mentorship, first aid, emergency procedures, mandatory sexual harassment training, Huawni procedures and expectations, and water safety reminders. Counselors are repeatedly educated on the fact that parents are entrusting us with their most prized possessions.

There are always at least two in-session Directors and three Assistant Directors to assist and guide our staff. If on closing day, when a camper rides out the camp gate, he or she can look back and smile, then Huawni has done again what we set out to do - build up a kid.
