Camp Huawni's Founding Family
Camp Huawni is the dream-come-true of Earl and Retha Adams, two lifelong Texas educators who invested their lives in the encouragement of youth.  The summer camp they founded in 1965 where 'kids could just be kids,' is a tangible legacy of their Christian faith and their love for kids. That tradition continues today as Camp Huawni remains one of the top youth summer camps in Texas while being operated by Earl and Retha's sons, Mike and Pat Adams, along with their families.

Camp Huawni Keeps the Dream Alive with Five Core Values
Today, the ideals on which Camp Huawni youth summer camp was established live on. At Camp Huawni, our philosophy is best expressed when a camper leaves Huawni having realized the Five Core Values upon which we operate. They are ever so simple but critically important to what we are trying to accomplish at Huawni.

Boys having fun

Having fun is the name of the game at Camp Huawni. That would almost seem a given, but today, good, wholesome, uplifting fun is a rarity.

The people, the program, and the surroundings of Camp Huawni are all focused toward this good-feeling, youth-oriented fun. It does not happen by chance; it happens by design. And it is especially important that fun be real, not contrived.

This task is fulfilled at Camp Huawni, and the satisfaction experienced in the hundreds of tell-tale smiles is indescribable.

Teamwork

We want a camper to feel better about himself or herself for having experienced Camp Huawni. Encouragement is an amazing elixir and allows for youth to blossom and grow in unimaginable ways.

Our staff is built on integrity and in addition to modeling Christian principles and values, they are also guided by our three point axiom - "Love the kids, love the kids, love the kids."

Camp Huawni makes it known that all children are welcome and other faiths are embraced here, where the God who loves all children is worshiped.  We love children for exactly who they are, and this inclusive environment is an essential piece of the recipe that makes Camp Huawni so magical.

Tradition fuels Camp Huawni.  When Earl and Retha Adams established this Texas staple in 1965, they envisioned a summer camp where wholesome summer fun was the objective, challenging sports and activities filled the day, and one on one encouragement was the norm and not the exception.

Today, the Adams family and Camp Huawni tradition continues as the Mike Adams and Pat Adams family still owns and operates Camp Huawni.  Each member of the family has come up through the ranks at Camp Huawni as Campers, Counselors, and Directors.

They not only honor the founding traditions but have also built on the legacy to make Camp Huawni one of the most outstanding summer youth camps in Texas.

Critter fun

Camp Huawni provides youth the opportunity to experience the simple pleasures of a Texas summer by spending time outdoors.

Mr. Adams built an outstanding summer youth camp where days are filled with rollicking laughter of sports, games, and activities and quiet times of conversation with a friend. Sunrise and sunset is seen and not just measured with a clock, the call of the whippoorwill at dusk is commonplace, and the last sound before sleep is the soothing summer breeze whispering in the East Texas pine trees.

This setting is Camp Huawni, located in Shelby County, Texas between the small towns of Timpson and Center, Texas. Hidden in the piney woods, the campsite is situated well off the beaten path on land that has been in the Adams family for nearly four generations.

Walking hand in hand

One of the greatest gifts in life is learning the value of building and maintaining relationships, the kind that help grow and nurture your spirit as an individual.

Throughout the course of a camper's stay at Camp Huawni, unique bonds and lifelong friendships with campers and staff alike are formed and showing your true colors is not only accepted, it is encouraged.

Witnessing the transformation that occurs in personality and openness between day one of Camp and on closing day is a gratifying experience.  Campers truly leave the gate with a second home and family and a part of their heart stays at Camp Huawni forever.
